Diabetic Digest – Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Readers:
So I finally did it, I went to see a foot doctor. I had
enough of trying to rid myself of pesky toe nail fungus
with over-the-counter anti-fungal medications.
The doctor removed the fungus-riddled part of the nail and
put me on the quick road to recovery. Now I just need to
put prescribed anti-fungal meds on the remainder of the
nail and, hopefully, in two months I will be fungus free.
Foot care is one of the most health concerns of diabetics.
If you have concerns about the health of your feet consult
a Podiatrist. Also, watch this video on diabetic foot
care.
Health Care Video Clip – Foot Care for Diabetes
Most people know that diabetes affects the blood sugar.
But few are aware of the disease’s effects on the feet!
If you’re diabetic, here’s why you’ll want to keep tabs
on your toes.

I actually saw an advertisement for a Podiatrist named Dr.
Foot. Weird, huh?

Whole Grains Take a Bite Out of Type 2 Diabetes
by Robert Preidt Business Week
Brown rice and whole grains can help lower the risk
of type 2 diabetes, and whole grains can even further
lower the risk, according to results of a study of
nearly 200,000 individuals. Researchers assessed the
participants’ food consumption every two to four years.
None of the participants had diabetes or heart disease
at the beginning of the study, but during follow-up,
there were approximately 10,500 new cases of type 2
diabetes.
Results showed that people who ate five or more servings
of white rice a week were 17 percent more likely to
develop type 2 diabetes than those who consumed less than
one serving per month. However, individuals who ate two
or more servings of brown rice per week were 11 percent
less likely to develop diabetes than those who ate less
than one serving a month. ‘We estimated that replacing
50 grams/day intake of white rice with the same amount
of brown rice was associated with a 16 percent lower risk
of type 2 diabetes, whereas the same replacement with
whole grains as a group was associated with a 36 percent
lower diabetes risk,’ wrote Dr. Qi Sun, of Harvard School
of Public Health in Boston, and colleagues.
The study was presented at the American Heart Association’s
Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism Conference in
San Francisco.
